Ceiling height is the single most common reason simulator projects die — usually after the equipment is already on order. Here's the honest math.
The short answer
- 8'0" — Workable for short irons and putting only. Most full swings will hit the ceiling.
- 9'0" — Minimum for most adult full swings with an iron. Drivers are tight.
- 9'6" — Comfortable for most golfers under 6'0" with a driver.
- 10'0"+ — Safe for nearly everyone, including taller players.
Measure at the worst point
The mistake people make: they measure the open span of the room and assume it's all that height. In reality, the relevant number is the lowest joist, beam, soffit, duct, or pipe in the hitting zone — not the room's average.
Walk the planned hitting area with a tape measure. Find the lowest obstruction directly above where you'll swing. That's your real ceiling height.
Why driver clearance matters most
Your driver swing is the longest, fastest, and highest of any club. If you can't swing your driver freely without hitting the ceiling, the simulator becomes irons-only — which gets old fast.
What to do if you're short on height
- Move to a different room (basement, garage, dedicated outbuilding)
- Reframe a section of ceiling between two joists
- Use a lower-trajectory mat position toward the back wall
- Accept it as a short-game and irons-only room
The best fix is the one you make on paper before ordering equipment.
